UEL’s roots date back to 1892 when the County Borough of West Ham established a West Ham Technical Institute to serve the local community. The aim was for the Institute be a ‘people’s university’ in the words of John Passmore Edwards, who gave a speech when the building was opened up for the first time.
The college provided courses in Science, Engineering and Art, and also established its own internal Degree courses in Science and Engineering, which were ratified by the University of London. It also had a department set up specifically for women.
Demand for technical education grew throughout the 1930s and 1940s, leading Essex County Council to create two further colleges at Walthamstow and Dagenham. In 1970, these three colleges (West Ham, Walthamstow, Dagenham) were combined as a merger of higher education colleges, to form the North East London Polytechnic.
By 1988, the North East London Polytechnic had become a higher education institution, renamed the Polytechnic of East London in 1989. But, just three years later, it became the University of East London, along with a number of other new universities.
UEL’s campuses have played host to Olympic and Paralympic projects including research, student involvement and sporting partnerships since it was announced that London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was successful in 2005.

The university is a lead academic sponsor of Hackney University Technical College which opened in 2012, one of the first university technical colleges in England and, in April 2013, the university was granted armorial bearings by the College of Arms.
Reputationally, UEL has been recognised in the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), in which 78% of its submissions were judged to be of at least internationally recognised quality. In the National Student Survey (NSS) results, it has also recorded a 97% satisfaction rating for teacher training.
UEL prides itself on civic engagement. Notable alumni include members of the Assemble Collective which won the 2015 Turner Prize. Other alumni include Gina Miller, who famously took on the British government and won with her ‘Exiting the European Union 2016’ case over its authority to implement Brexit without approval from the House of Commons.
Hilary Armstrong, British Labour Party politician and formerly Member of Parliament, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, British actor, writer and director, Garry Bushell, British journalist, television critic and broadcaster, and Marina Diamandis, singer-songwriter in Marina and the Diamonds have also passed through the university’s doors over the years.
