The Student Guide: Where To Go Shopping In Newcastle

As a student in the North east city of Newcastle, you won’t be disappointed by the vast array of shopping destinations to hit up. It can be difficult to narrow down the best places though, which is where we come in handy.

There are shopping styles to suit everyone’s tastes and budgets from high street stores to modern shopping centres to designer outlets to vintage markets.

So, you can splash the cash in tons of different places- why aye, man!

Shopping Newcastle

1. Eldon Square

Eldon Square is the oldest and most well-known shopping centre within Newcastle city centre.

It’s conveniently located on Blackett Street and is open 7 days a week so whenever you’re in need of shopping haul, you’re sorted.

There’s a vast range of stores and high street favourites to have a mooch around from John Lewis to Foot Locker to The Body Shop to Urban Outfitters, and so many more.

If you’re wanting a bite to eat after a big shopping spree, then there’s over 25 restaurants too.

Not to mention, Eldon Square will also be hosting the annual student night this September where you can get up to 50% off your favourite brands, check it out!

2. MetroCentre

Metrocentre has been a top shopping destination in the Geordie city since 1986 and is still loved by locals and students alike.

You’ll find the shopping centre located in the Dunston area of Gateshead, close to the River Tyne – it’s worth visiting for definite.

Being one of Europe’s largest shopping centres, you can shop around more than 250 world famous brands such as Footaslyum, Guess and JD to name a couple.

Don’t worry, there’s something for everyone’s budgets so you don’t have to spend too much of your student loan!

There’s also tons of dining and leisure opportunities within the complex, like an Odeon IMAX cinema and Adventure Golf.

If you’re not in the Gateshead area, it’s only a 10-minute train journey from the city centre.

3. The Gate

When it comes to shopping in Newcastle, nowhere does it quite like The Gate.

You’ll find this shopping mall situated in the city centre on Newgate Street, just under a 10-minute walk from Newcastle Train Station.

Whilst The Gate is mostly home to restaurants, entertainment hubs and a nightclub, it’s also home to Newcastle’s Vintage Vera Kilo Sale.

It’s a great place to buy some fab second-hand clothing and just £15 per kilo so if you’re looking to revamp your wardrobe, it’s a must!

After you’re done, head to the wide range of food places like Nando’s or Pizza Hut, or if you fancy it why not take part in some Virtual Reality at YuMe World or an escape room experience at Escape Newcastle? There’s loads to do here, go experience it for yourself.

4. Grainger Market

If you’re after a unique shopping experience then Grainger Market is right up your street, no literally, you’ll find it located in the heart of the city centre.

This historic market has been a staple of Newcastle’s shopping scene for over 200 years so, it’s gotta be good right?!

Within the market there’s over 100 different local trades and small businesses selling everything from vintage clothing to fresh meat and vegetables to arts and craft stalls to cakes and bakes.

It’s open 6 days a week and there’s some notable events that take place here like the Christmas Night Market, if you’ve just moved to the city, it’s definitely worth checking out this quaint market.

5. Royal Quays

Next up on shopping in Newcastle is The Royal Quays Outlet and Independent centre.

This place offers shoppers in North Sheilds a chance to explore over 40 stores and hundreds of brand favourites, with discounts of up to 60% – woop!

You can shop around fantastic retailers like Next, Roman. Mountain Warehouse and The Beauty Outlet to name a few.

This wonderful shopping hub is also home to the Black Storm Brewery and Second Bite Bistro along with many more food and drink options if you want to re-fuel and take a break from your retail threapy!

For those living in the city centre, Royal Quays sits beside the River Tyne and is easily accessible by public transport so you can be there in just 15-minutes.

6. Monument Mall

Monument Mall is a bustling shopping centre conveniently located for students living in accommodation in the city centre, it can be found by the Monument station on the Tyne and Wear Metro stop.

Despite being smaller than other retailers, with 15 stores to choose from, you’ll still find popular brands for everyone to enjoy with TK Maxx, Fat Face, Jack Wills and Hugo Boss.

So, if you need to grab something for a night out or need a new fit for uni, then you’re sorted!

Feeling peck-ish? There’s Banyan Bar and Kitchen and The Botanist for you to grab some tasty food and a few drinks with your mates.

7. Quayside Market

Away from the high street brands and modern shopping centres is the historic Quayside Market.

You’ll find it located on Quayside hence the name, which is just over a 5-minute walk from Newcastle Castle.

If you’re in need of a cute gift for one of your pals or want something nice to treat yourself, then Quayside Market is the place.

There’re independent retailers offering handcrafted jewellery and accessories as well as fashion clothing stalls, street food stalls, plant stalls and so much more.

The vibe here is great with buskers and live music and a wholesome atmosphere to soak up every Sunday 10am-4pm.

Trust us, if you’re after somewhere different and want to find some hidden gems, it’s worth going to.

8. Northumberland Street

Lastly on our impressive list of where to go shopping is Northumberland Street, known by locals as the best high street in the city with tons of brands and stores to explore.

It’s been labelled as the most expensive location in the UK outside London to own a store – wow, is it the Geordie Carnaby Street?!

Walking up this street you’ll find big brands like Primark, JD, Mango, H&M, Flannels, and Pandora as well as independent stores to shop to your heart’s desire.

If you want to have a pit stop and enjoy some yummy scran, head to Fenwick Food Hall.

You can enjoy street entertainment and live music whilst taking a stroll around and the street is even home to exciting events throughout the year like the Christmas Market and fair.

Each store has varying opening hours so it’s worth checking out first!
