Around the building you’ve got a laundry room, bike storage, a study space, a bookable communal room and an on-site office, so plenty of what you’ll need in the first few weeks is already built in.

What’s the smartest way to get there?

If you’re driving, treat Shire Oak Road like any residential street on a busy Saturday: pull up close, unload fast, then move the car rather than blocking someone’s driveway. On-site parking covers this, and if it’s full, or you’ve a helper’s car to place too, Headingley has options nearby: St Anne’s and the Arndale Centre car park on Otley Road, Headingley Station car park on Kirkstall Lane, Woodhouse Moor car park on Hyde Park Road, and the Lounge car park on Ash Road. Coming by bus instead? Services 22, 23, 24, 25, 27 and 28 all travel along Otley Road and Headingley Lane into the city centre, and service 22 goes directly to Headingley Campus, worth remembering long after moving day.

What needs to be in your hand luggage?

Pack one bag as if the rest of the car might get delayed by a week, because on a chaotic day, it might as well have. Bedding or a sleeping bag, a couple of towels, basic toiletries, your charger, some cash or a card, and your booking confirmation with photo ID for collecting your keys all belong in there, not buried under a duvet in the boot. Add a kettle, a mug and a few kitchen basics too, and a small toolkit turns flat-pack furniture from a wrestling match into a five-minute job.

What’s within walking distance?

Otley Road is two minutes away and covers most of what the first week throws at you, Sainsbury’s included. The same stretch is thick with bars and restaurants, Zaap Thai and The Box among them, and Headingley Carnegie Stadium is close enough to turn into a regular Saturday habit. You’re also sitting on one of Leeds’ best-known pub crawl routes, so there’s plenty to explore once the boxes are flattened.

  • Sort the boring jobs first. Find the fuse box and the stopcock before you get distracted hanging fairy lights.
  • Keep your booking confirmation and ID somewhere you can lay hands on in seconds, not filed under “miscellaneous” at the bottom of a box.
  • If you’re arriving on a weekend, expect Otley Road to be busy with everyone else’s move-in day too. Give yourself extra time for that last mile.
  • Say hello to your flatmates before the kitchen fills up with seven strangers’ saucepans. It makes the first shared meal less awkward.
