1. Roundhay Park 

Coming in first within our list of the best walks in Leeds is none other than Roundhay Park. 

Dating back to 1872, Roundhay Park is one of the largest urban parks in the world and is right here on your doorstep, with over 700 acres of parkland, lakes and woodland to explore. 

Here you’ll discover a side of Leeds that is often overshadowed by its vibrant student culture.

With beautiful lakes and streams, formal gardens, walking trails, a cafe, as well as an indoor wildlife park.

2. Woodhouse Moor 

Whilst studying in Leeds, Woodhouse Moor also known as Hyde Park, is somewhere you’ll frequent a lot. 

Located one mile from the city centre and right by the university district, Woodhouse Moor is a popular green space covering around 26 hectares. 

‘Hyde Park’ as it’s most notably known as, was the city’s first urban park and is today home to plenty of open space, sports fields, tennis courts and a skate park.  

There’s tons of space to enjoy a nice stroll around, and it’s always heaving with students, especially on a warm summer’s day. 

Due to the park’s convenient location, you can head to the array of coffeeshops, pubs and restaurants on Woodhouse Lane once you’re finished mooching about, or head into the city centre!

3. Temple Newsam 

Whether you’re seeking a peaceful escape from the campus buzz, a refreshing study break, or keen to discover the hidden gems of this lively city, Temple Newsam is a must-visit. 

Temple Newsham is one of the most stunning historic houses in the UK, and is set in 1500 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland. 

You can stroll around the Tudor Jacobean mansion house filled with art and antiques, then head to the working rare breed farm and magnificent parkland.

There’s also the Temple Newsam Tea Rooms so you can grab a little treat and a cuppa if you fancy it. 

Whilst you do need to purchase a ticket to the house and farm at Temple Newsam, it’s worth splashing the cash for!

4. Kirkstall Abbey 

Located North West of Leeds City Centre, Kirkstall Abbey is one of England’s best preserved Cistercian monasteries.

Nestled alongside the River Aire, the iconic ruins and award-winning park are steeped in over 800 years of history and are a great place to spend an afternoon. 

There’s plenty of chance to get some striking Instagram shots at this mediaeval monastery.

And, it’s free to visit for Leeds residents – just remember to bring proof of address and you’ll get an annual pass!

5. Meanwood Park 

If you like the outdoors, we urge you to take a visit to Meanwood Park. 

This peaceful oasis in the heart of Leeds spans 29 hectares and is home to plenty of wildlife, walking trails, tennis courts, basketball courts, and picnic benches. 

Tucked away in North Leeds, this little gem is a great place to spend a few hours.

Whether you’re after somewhere to relax with a picnic, or just pop in your headphones and walk around.

6. Beckett Park 

Located next to Leeds Beckett University, Headingley Campus, Beckett Park is the perfect spot for a peaceful walk.

Situated in the heart of Chapeltown, Potternewton Park is over 32 acres and is located 2 miles from the city centre. 

It’s home to Europe’s longest running West Indian Carnival, which takes place on the August bank holiday weekend and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
