There’s nothing like a cheeky BBQ in the sunshine, it gives you the perfect excuse to eat loads of food and have a few drinks.

It’s no doubt that having a BBQ can soon add up in price, and the whole thing can end up being pretty expensive!

That’s why we’ve found some cheap BBQ food ideas to give you some serious inspo, because it doesn’t always have to be expensive.

Let’s take a look, we hope you’re feeling hungry and ready to cook a feast at your student accommodation.

1. Inexpensive Cuts Of Meat

Believe it or not, buying meat for your BBQ doesn’t always have to be expensive, and there are plenty of cheap BBQ food ideas for you to enjoy!

Barbecuing and grilling meat that may be a little tougher and cheaper is still extra delicious when cooked on the BBQ.

Inexpensive cuts of meat are things like whole chicken, beef and pork ribs, pork shoulder, brisket, and turkey!

Lamb breast and ribs is another type of meat that doesn’t cost much at all, and it’s bursting with flavour.

You can either head to your local butcher for the meat (which we’ll talk about later) or just take a look in a supermarket near you.

Either way, having a BBQ doesn’t mean you have to buy sirloin steaks for everyone (although if you’re offering?!)

2. Add Extras To Burgers

Making a burger isn’t expensive at all, and you can actually make them even tastier by adding some inexpensive extras.

As far as cheap BBQ food ideas go, you can get burgers from a shop near you for just a couple of quid.

But, how do you add some pizzazz to that burger? Well, just be sure to add plenty of extras!

When we say extras, we basically mean as many yummy toppings as you can think of.

Whether it’s a bit of BBQ halloumi or some yummy fresh salad, you can do whatever you want to your burgers!

How about a bit of BBQ sauce, or you could go all out and add a fried egg for extra boujeeness?

3. Create Your Own Kebabs

You can’t beat a good kebab now and then, and no, we’re not talking about the greasy donner meat you get on the way home from a night out!

Creating your own kebab is another one of our awesome cheap BBQ food ideas and can be easily done.

All you need to do is purchase some skewers that are BBQ safe, you can grab them on Amazon for £6!

We’d recommend a chicken, chorizo & pepper skewer (maybe with a bit of halloumi too if you’re a cheese lover.)

For vegetarians, try courgette, aubergine, onion, tomatoes, and pepper – it’s an absolutely delicious combo.

The best part? It’ll barely cost you anything for a few skewers!

4. Bulk Up Your Salads

Salads can really complement a BBQ, and they don’t just have to be a boring mix of lettuce, cucumber, and tomato – we promise.

It’s easy to assume that salads with all the extras can be a little expensive, but if you’re wise with what you pick, it really isn’t.

A yummy salad is one of our cheap BBQ food ideas that’ll seriously impress your family and friends, believe it or not!

Potato salads can bulk up any BBQ, and you can’t go wrong with a classic Greek one either.

Tinned extras like chickpeas, tuna, and canned salmon also add plenty of inexpensive flavour to your salads.

5. Make Your Own Marinades

Want to add a bit of #spice to your BBQ food? Have you ever thought to make your own marinades?

It’s actually a lot easier than it sounds, because we do understand the love/hate relationship with students and cooking!

The secret to any homemade marinade? Fat, acid, and flavour. It’s as simple as.

It’s really up to you what herbs you want to add, and you could even add a bit of sweetness to the mix too!

Don’t worry about your breath smelling either, because we’d deffo recommend a generous amount of garlic in any marinade you make.

If you haven’t grilled veggies yet, you’re seriously missing out, and we’re not just talking about a bog standard corn on the cob!

You can grill anything on your BBQ, from mushrooms to tomatoes, to onion, pepper and even asparagus.

Veggies are never too expensive either, which is always an added bonus.

7. Visit Your Local Butcher

Visiting a local butcher means you can purchase cheap but yummy cuts of meat for your BBQ, as well as meat for great value.

You don’t have to do this though if you’d rather just go to your local supermarket, they have fish counters there that can help you out.

9. Freeze Your Buns

Don’t forget to freeze your burger and sausage baps, it saves so much more money as opposed to buying fresh ones every time!

They can easily be defrosted in the microwave, so you don’t have to worry about them going stale.

You could even save them for a later date if you’re planning another BBQ, which is bound to save you money in the long run!
